• Central Park Primary, Plashet School and Roman Road School will get investment for solar panels, heat pumps and other green technology to cut an estimated £15,000 in costs from each school budget
Three Newham schools are the first to be chosen to take part in a pilot worth a total of £12.5 million – with the Mayor Sadiq Khan’s Greener School programme contributing £2.9 million for projects to increase energy efficiency, protect the planet and save money.
Councillor Sarah Ruiz, Cabinet member for Environment, Sustainable Transport, Children’s Services and Education said: “This is a fantastic project which will not only help tackle the climate emergency, it also helps schools to save money.
“I know from my many visits to our schools that children are the most passionate residents when it comes to tackling the climate emergency and I’m sure they will involve themselves in all these projects as they come on stream, from water conservation to solar panels, LED lighting to better insulation and heat pumps.
“The children of this borough know better than anyone the challenges and opportunities we face in saving the planet and I’m sure they’ll get right behind these projects within their own schools.”
Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan said he hopes this pilot project will be replicated across the capital – which could lead to savings of £50 million from school budgets every year.
He said: “"This investment will help schools reduce their energy costs, so they can spend more on vital resources such as books, technology and staff, and cut carbon emissions so schools can play their part in tackling air pollution in the capital,"
